Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis to attend the UN General Assembly's high-level events in New York

On 19-22 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis will participate in the General Debate of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and in a number of high-level events in New York, the United States of America, as part of a delegation led by the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda. At the same time, the 30th anniversary of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia’s membership of the UN will be celebrated.

This year’s General Debate will focus on the theme, ‘Building resilience through hope – to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people and revitalize the United Nations.’ Heads of State or Government and other senior officials will discuss steps to be taken to implement the commitments negotiated by the UN member states last year and will seek to build consensus around the recommendations put forward by the UN Secretary-General in the report, titled ‘Our Common Agenda'.

Landsbergis, together with the President Nausėda, will take part in the solemn ceremony, co-organised by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, to honour the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Landsbergis will also attend the Presidents of the Baltic states and Foreign Ministers' meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Landsbergis will meet with Foreign Ministers from different regions to discuss relevant items on bilateral, regional and international agendas, possibilities for strengthening bilateral political and economic cooperation, the current and future diplomatic representation, as well as partnership within international organisations.

During his visit to New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs will also present Lithuania’s position at an informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers on Afghanistan.
In addition, Landsbergis will hold meetings with Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and members of the Jewish organisations based in the U.S.
