Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis tells his German counterpart: The crisis on the border with Belarus has to be addressed at the EU level rather than at a bilateral level

On 19 November, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis had a telephone conversation with the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and discussed the situation on the border with Belarus.

“We agreed that the crisis on the border with Belarus had to be addressed at the EU level rather than at a bilateral level. And we must apply broader sanctions on the Belarusian regime that were agreed upon during the Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday,” said Landsbergis.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister noted that the European Union had worked purposefully for a long time to reach consensus on a common policy towards Belarus. “We should not give up now. We have to continue to follow the course of action together. Let’s play according to the European rules, not according to Lukashenko's rules, as he prefers a game with no rules," said Landsbergis.

Landsbergis received assurance from Mass, that EU sanctions aimed at the Belarusian state carrier Belavia had to remain.

The two Foreign Ministers also agreed to continue maintaining close direct contacts.
