Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein
On 21 September in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. In the meeting, the Foreign Ministers discussed progress achieved on migration issues and the process of returning irregular migrants to Iraq. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed the need to further suspend Iraqi Airlines flights to Belarus.
When speaking about the challenges of the cold season facing the migrants, who have entered the territory of Lithuania, the Foreign Ministers agreed to continue organising consular missions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq to Lithuania. During these missions, travel documents are issued to persons, who have crossed the Lithuanian border illegally, and they get help to return home. The next mission should take place at the end of September.
“Cooperation with Iraq on voluntary return of Iraqis to their country of origin runs smoothly, but we wish more assistance from Iraq in receiving those citizens, whose asylum applications were rejected and who are to be forcibly expelled from Lithuania,” said Landsbergis.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also stressed that Lithuania supported the Iraqi Government's efforts to build a stable and democratic country, and to implement social and economic reforms.
Landsbergis met with the Iraqi Foreign Minister for the third time this year and invited his counterpart to visit Lithuania.
