Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: Lithuania and the United Arab Emirates have great potential for economic cooperation
On 20 September in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Minister of State of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates Khalifa Shaheen Almarar. The meeting focused on the opportunities for bilateral cooperation, Lithuania's participation at EXPO2020, and the UAE-Lithuania business forum.
“There is great potential for the development of economic relations, the promotion of investment, as well as for increasing the accessibility of tourism destinations. Even though the geographical distance between our two countries is great, we share many common interests and have huge potential for working together. The Minister of State has also reassured me that Lithuania was an interesting and attractive business partner of the UAE," said Landsbergis.
When speaking about the challenges of legal cooperation, Landsbergis called on the UAE to accelerate and finalise the international agreements that were important to Lithuania, e.g., on investment promotion, mutual legal assistance and extradition.
Landsbergis said that Lithuania supported and promoted the UAE's initiatives and efforts towards climate change mitigation and innovation promotion.
In addition, the two Ministers discussed the most pressing issues of bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation, and voiced their support for candidates for positions at various UN organisations. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also invited the UAE's Minister of State to visit Lithuania.
