On 6 September 1991 Colombia recognized the re-established independent State of Lithuania.
Diplomatic relations were re-established on 8 August 1993.
From 1995 to 1999, Vytautas Antanas Dambrava served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Colombia (resided in Spain).
From 1995 to 1999, Carlos Bula-Camacho served as the first Ambassador of Colombia to Lithuania (resided in Poland).
