Australia recognized the independent state of Lithuania de jure on 27 August 1991.
Diplomatic relations with Australia were established on 6 November 1991.
From 2008 to 2011, Dainius Petras Kamaitis served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Australia (resided in Japan).
From 1991 to 1994, Robson Burgess served as the first Ambassador of Australia to Lithuania (resided in Denmark).
