January 13th to be proclaimed the Freedom Defenders’ Day of Lithuania in Ottawa

On the 30th anniversary of the events of January 13th, His Worship Jim Watson, the mayor of Canada‘s capital, plans to proclaim January 13th, 2021 as the Freedom Defenders’ Day of Lithuania in Ottawa. Proclamation is planned to be released on Wednesday. On January 13th, a meadow of forget-me-not flowers will bloom in front of the Heritage Building of Ottawa City Hall (195 Elgin St., Ottawa, ON K2P 2L7) in memory of the Lithuanian Freedom defenders.

Due to the pandemic, majority of the events in Canada are held virtually. We invite Lithuanian community and friends of Lithuania in Canada to join these events.

On January 13th at 9 AM local time, we invite you to light the candles of unity, victory and remembrance for 10 minutes. The lit candles symbolize the Freedom Defenders’ fires that were put up next to the Parliament of Lithuania in 1991, the light of defended Freedom, victory against brutal force, and the memory of the victims.

“Forget-me-not” Campaign and the Virtual Run/Walk events are held until the 17th of January:

The pictures from the “Aš, Lietuva ir Laisvė“ drawing contest are published on the Embassy‘s website and Facebook: http://ca.mfa.lt/ca/en/news/virtual-exhibition-of-as-lietuva-ir-laisve-drawing-contest
